Abstract

India recently celebrated its 75th anniversary of independence, yet women continue to face discrimination and lack true independence. When it takes place inside the confines of a married home, rape is a crime against women that breaches their dignity and self-respect and reduces them to the status of objects used primarily for sexual pleasure.

Marriage is viewed as a sacred social institution in India. One of the most defining characteristics of a husband and wife’s relationship is the legal consequences of their sexual activity. But nowadays, getting married is a license to rape.
